November 1995

This month is notable for various reasons. Not least because it marks the tenth anniverary of the release of Miss Sarajevo. Fiona and I had just barely moved into together in our new home in Glasgow and by November '95 we'd acquired satellite TV. Miss Sarajevo seemed to be forever on permaplay on MTV during those cold, dark November days and every time I hear this song, I'm transported back in time to warm and vivid memories. It also reminds me of my grandfather who was a tenor in his youth. In later years I can remember clearly when he'd sing once he had a good single malt to warm up his vocal chords, and when I hear Pavarotti singing, I always think of my grandfather. It's also a just generally good song for this time of year, particualrly if you listen to the lyrics and follow the context.
