For The Record

It took my Mac Mini G4 1.42 GHz around 18 hours to rip and encode Back To The Future Part II into an 1750 kbps, H.264 MP4 file using 2-pass encoding. I'm guessing the new dual core intel boxes will do that job in about 4-5 hours, which is still too long. So, when they release a 3+GHz dual core PowerPro box - roughly equating to about 2-3 hours - I'm buying. Or, I just stay as I am and continue set it up to rip at 11PM every night, having completed the job shortly before I return home from the office the following day. I keep worrying I'm going to burn out the CPU doing that, like they wear out.

I remember ripping audio CD's into MP3's back in 1997 with a single speed CD-ROM drive and a Pentium and that took several hours per CD - not helped by using crap software at the time. Roll on the day when a DVD movie can be ripped as quickly as a CD.

At this rate, I'll have ripped and encoded my entire DVD collection by April. Admittedly, a task not helped by the fact that I just ordered seasons 1-3 of Curb Your Enthusiasm on DVD. Make that June.

Bonus : Intel iMac vs G5 iMac boot-up burnout video. Remarkable. It does feel like the G5 iMac seems to take an age to boot even compared with my G4 Mini. But still, the intel iMac is pretty quick.
