Speed Trapped

I bought a brand new 56k modem yesterday. I never thought I be doing something like that in 2002. The area we live in is a digital communications backwater. No ADSL. No cable. No ISDN. Apparently I'm lucky I have an analogue line. The funny (peculiar, not haha) thing is that less than 2 miles away lies the M1 motorway, the first (as the name suggests) of its kind to be built in the UK sometime in the 50's. I'm not up a mountain, down a valley, in a field or a cave or on an island. As my l33t friends would say, this SUX0RS.

So, anyway I had this PCI Winmodem before, you know, an internal job, but Winmodems don't work in Linux. As you know I installed Linux a couple of months ago only to discover this fact. The solution, either purchase an external (proper) modem or write my own set of Linux Winmodem drivers, it was a close-run thing, I can tell you. So, this I have done - the purchase a modem option, of course.

So, that's why I found myself shelling out my hard earned for a freakin modem in 2002. Pity me. Then be amazed that I've maintained my entire online existence at 56K (actually 50.6K).
