I'll come out of the closet. I have at least two mental blocks when it comes to basic grammar and arithmetic calculations, the cause of which I can only attribute to being absent from school on the days those lessons were covered. They are, in no order, the correct usage of apostrophes and the sums 7 + 5, 7 + 8 and 8 + 3.
The problems manifest themselves in the form of a slight processing delay every time I'm required to deploy an apostrophe and understand the rules of usage therein, and whenever I'm required to add up the numbers shown above. Maybe only a couple of seconds, nothing major, but certainly long enough to be noticeable to me. I've lived with this shame for many years now, probably 25 or so, and I find it impossible to correct these ailments.
With the arithmetic it's almost like I have to do the sums manually in my head every time rather than just quickly picking the pre-calculated, stored answer from memory. I don't know the answer to 7 + 5, I have to work it out slowly every single time, usually by adding 7 + 6 and deducting 1. Not an ideal state of affairs.
The apostrophes, well I'm learning. My hang up seems to be around their usage on things like its and it's but I think I've cracked it, it's not easy when you see an apostrophe and can't work out its precise positioning without deep thought.
Please don't think less of me. However, I suspect you have too have secret mental blocks so it's time to come out of the closet and tell the world.
